Question
Hello!  I need help with a major dog problem.  I have a 3yr old lab mix.  I have had him for about two years and got him from a shelter.  My husband and I were out of town this past weekend and had people come to the house a couple times a day to feed and let the dog out.  When we returned home he had peed and pooped on the floor.  He does not normally have accidents.  Later that night I beleive his anal gland leeked which is a rancid stench.  My husband and I had to leave the room and went to sleep in the guest bedroom.   Our dog usually sleeps with us, but we didnt allow him in the room with us last night because of the smell.  Today, while I was home, he had more accidents on the floor and then went and peed in the bed we were sleeping in last night.  I know this is a long history, but I am trying to figure out what factors, if any, may have a role in these accidents.  I would appreciate any help!  I am starting to worry about him.  Thanks!  -Becky

Answer
Hi Becky!Hi Becca,

To me anyway, not knowing if it's normal for your dog to have accidents in your home, or if your dog is house trained, I would think this is a symptom some kind of sickness.
Because the onset of this condition was sudden, it's probably safe to say there is a physical reason for this, condition.

Sudden loss of bowels or bladder control is a sign of Epilepsy. Not all seizures have the dog falling over or foaming at the mouth. The classic type of seizure is where the dog suddenly beings to chomp their lips or chew at nothing. They may even simply "zone out" - that is, just stop and stare at nothing for a few seconds, then start up normally again.

I am not diagnosing your dog, but just pointing out that the dog needs to be seen by a doctor if going in the house is not a normal part of your dog's behavior. It sounds as though the dog can't control himself from having these accidents.

You should take the dog to a vet for evaluation. Until you get an appointment with the doctor, don't let your dog have the run of the house when you are not able to supervise him. Try to contain him to one room, which will make clean up easier for you.

Please feel free to get back to me with any further questions. I hope this is helpful and I wish you the best of luck! Please keep me posted and give him lots of kisses for me!Sending wagging tails your way!
