Question
I have adopted a great dane two weeks ago.  i was told he had a staph infection.  i have gone through two additional rounds of antibiotics, the last being baytril.  both my husband and i have caught terrible colds - i think from the dog and now i sound like him - i probably have bronchitis.  his muscous from nose is sometimes brown...  what do you think he has and how do i clear it up?  thanks for getting back to me.  nadine

Answer
Hi Nadine! You did not get anything from the dog. There really are only a few diseases that are communicable: rabies, and ringworm are the most common.

Staph infections may be difficult to clear up if the underlying reason the dog has the infection is not detected and fixed. For example, if the dog is allergic to food, which causes a Staph infection, then if you don't change the food, the infection will persist in spite of antibiotics.

Try and get your vet to look for the underlying problem.

Hope this helps!Nicole.D.
