bleeding tail

Question
Our beautiful black lab gets so excited that he has worn the hair off the tip of his tail from happy wagging.

It looks calloused and crack and bleeds so that we see blood on cabinets, pants, etc.

Any suggestions on how to treat it?

Thank you and peace, Ken Buckwald

Answer
Hello there!

Your right! Your dog has 'happy tail syndrome'.

What needs to be done is a trip to the vet, have the area shaved and possibly have sutures placed and the calloused area cleaned up if warrented.

Many of these dogs need to have a bandage put on the tail to help aid in the healing process. SOME dogs need to have part of their tail amputated to help stop this (because some never heal)

good luck!
