Question
Hello Dc. Fry:
I have 2 things I'd like to ask, please.
1.) My roomate has 3 resident cats and I found a cat about 9 months ago, that I think might have been a farrel cat prier to me, all though he was already fixed. But the reason I think he is, is because he kinda attacts the other cats (chassing them, pinning one down once and bitting the other cats kneck)He just adamadiclly starts to fight with the other cats when he comes in contact with them. I'v tryed several times the basic introduction methods, like swiching bedding, feeding on oppisite sides of a door, distracting them with lots of toys, water bottles to brake them up,but H2O dose'nt bother or stop my cat.(MALCOM) So I inclosed the patio that conects to my room through a sliding glass door. Both rooms togther totalling about 200 sq. ft.
Malcom's a loving cat at night when we go to sleep, he'll crull up by my head sometimes.
But he dosen't like to be pet very much, and sometimes he kinda atacks ME, to the point that I have to leave the room. But he dosen't do that alot. But his ears go back and he spring at me bitting. and it hurts. I think it's because he so coped up in the cage and thinks of me as a nother animal, maybe and sometimes when he can see the other cats on the other side of his cage, he gets jealious. And I don't know what to do cause I know it's not right to keep him like this... although he dose have mega toys and scraching posts, and ramps and beds, and hiding places, and lots of sun... still sometimes in the morrning he crys when the other cat are around or if he sees them or I don't know why but it hurts me to hear it. although He has adaped pretty well in a way. But I just want him to be able to run and be happy. But it's my roomates house.
Malcom has also gotten much to fat because of the lack of exersize he dose'nt get. Please help me. Malcoms my baby, (as mean as he may be) and I can't give him up. (It's just malcom and me, I don't have any family) So he's like my family I geuss.
Also I was wondering why it is that he dose'nt like being pet that much? (just alittle under the chin now and then)He also loves to lick on his furry toys, why is that. I'v heard of cats doing that, I just don't understand why.
Thanks alot for letting me take up so much of your time, and I hope you have a really good day today.
              Thanks agien....

Answer
Hello Leesa

There are many cats that do not adapt to multiple cat households...some just like to be solitary.  What I would recommend if for you to try FELIWAY Diffusers in the house to see if that helps ease some of the stress and anxiety as well as add several drops of RESCUE REMEDY to all the water dishes on a daily basis.

As far as not liking the petting, he may very well have hyperasthesia, which means the nerve endings in his skin are extra sensitive so even a light touch feels like you are hurting him.

Many cats like the furry toys as it reminds them of real prey.

When introducing a new cat to resident cats it can take MONTHS for them to get along.  I usually recommend isolating the new cat from the others for 3-4 weeks and then slowly letting the new cat out for 15 minutes at a time supervised.

For the overweight issue, I would recommend cutting back his food portions by 25% and try to play with him for 30 minutes a day.

Good luck,
Dr. Fry
