Question
My son has a 2 year old black lab, not spayed that he has left in my care. I think by looking at her she may be pregnant.  Her nipples have grown, especially the bottom two.  She is has always been very energetic, but three weeks ago we had to give up her companion a siberean husky for biting my grandson. Ever sinde, I have noticed she is lathargic or maybe sad.  However, her appetite has decreased, and does not seem herself.

If I don't know if she is pregnant. Is there anyway to tell if she is without a vet? Funds are very limited.  Also, any way to I tell when she is due?

Thanks

Answer
Well there is no way except wait and see. That's too bad that he didn't get her spayed. Unwanted puppies are the last thing anyone needs when funds are short.

Was this Siberian also not fixed? She may very well be sad without him around, but that is something she will get past.

So there is no way to know unless you have a vet xray her and that can't be done until she is 31 days along. A dog's gestation is nine weeks long, which means if you want to save money you should try and get her spayed now before she has these pups.

When a young dog has a heat cycle, the first or second one, their nipples usually do enlarge anyway. The more heat cycles she has without being spayed the more at risk she gets for breast cancer also.

It's a lose-lose situation with her being in the present conditions she is-whether or not she is pregnant. That will just add to everyone's burden.

Maybe you need to ask your son for some spaying money for all your care you are giving.  You can also get certificates from the local Humane Societies to take a large chunk off of the bill from the vets.

It's worth a try to get one and have this done soon.
