introducing a new adult dog to a home with a cat

Question
i have an 8-year old Yorkie, and a year and a half ago, we got a kitten, so the dog adjusted to having a kitten in the home.  This weekend we brought home a lovely Lab/Rottweiler, 1-2 years old, from the local SPCA.  We were told that he was fine with cats.  Unfortunately, he barks and tries to chase ours, who is absolutely terrified and won't come into the part of the house we live in- my elderly parents live upstairs and that's where she's hanging out since Saturday. What advice could you give me?  It breaks my heart for our cat to be frightened in her own home.  (The dogs are getting along very very well and the new dog is very intelligent, knows commands, etc., but is aggressive with other large male dogs.)  THANK YOU !

Answer
It is always a good idea to take introductions slowly.  Once the Lab is comfortable in the hoouse with you, then expose him to the cat for short periods of time while you hold the cat.  That way, the cat will feel secure in your arms and the dog will be under control.
