Question
Jennifer Fry ,

is it true that if you feed your "pregnant" guinea pig its regular pellets, that the babies will grow too big for the mother to deliver them?

I have a pregnant sow and she is near 9 months old. This is her second litter (the first litter there were no problems) , and my 4th. She is not experiencing any problems, but I have some questions ???
1)I have been giving her a vitamin supplement for the past week now. Should I continue to give her the vitamins?
2) Should I continue to give her the pellets?
3) I know all the birth process and I have one question on that. Does the guinea pig know when she is going to deliver earlier on in the day?
She had her first litter of one on December 24, 2003.

Her mated man is a absolutely beautiful tortoiseshell and he already produced a litter of 3 last Feb. (they all are pretty and healthy).
   She is around 3-4 weeks pregnant and you can tell that she is carrying, but not how many she is carrying.

Thanks
Samantha :)";

Answer
I am not too familiar with Guinea Pigs, however, I do know you MUST supplement them with VITAMIN C EVERY DAY!

If she had her first litter before 6 mos of age she should be okay otherwise their hips fuse and they can't give birth.

You can continue her on the pellets and supplement.

You would have to have an x-ray to determine how many she is carrying.  If she is in labor and struggling and no babies are being passed, you will have to get her to the vet ASAP.
