Weird cat balding

Question
We have an almost 10 month old female cat (and her brother), and lately, I've noticed bald spots in front of her ears down to the top of her eyes. It doesn't seem to hurt her if you touch it, and the skin doesn't seem to be irritated by my untrained eye. I've checked for fleas and there are none. I've thought it could be stress. Two weeks ago, our air conditioning went out for a few days, and we brought them to a friends house so they didn't get too hot for a couple days, and there was a dog there, and the whole time the cat and her brother suddenly started hissing at each other. We also went through hurricane Isaac last week, though we didn't lose power for too long, and we've had a new roommate move in. It seems like there are a lot of factors that could contribute to stress, but what could I do to make it better? The cats have been eating a little less than usual (Iams Kitten Chow).

I feel like I've thrown a lot at you all of a sudden, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot

Answer
If you look at other cats, you will see that the spot you are talking about generally has less hair then other places on their bodies. The hair there is thinner, and that can certainly get even more thin if the cat is losing hair from stress.
I would say that yes, your cats are stressed for sure!
Now, looking at my cat, who is ten, she has very little hair right at the bottom of her ears, but the hair above her eyes is all there.

One thing that would concern me is have they gotten ringworm? That area is often the first spot it shows up in, but both cats would not have the same thing that looks alike. If the boy doesn't have it, but has some hair loss, then it could be that they are over grooming one another which does happen. Stress will cause some cats to over-groom as well.

Honestly without seeing the cat it's hard to tell what it could be, but my suggestion would be that you have her looked at and have the skin scraped for any parasites or checked for ringworm fungus.

Young cats are prone to both more so than older cats so it would be in her and your best interest to have her looked over.

Better to be safe than sorry if it is a skin disease. You can't get mites from her but you sure can get ringworm!
So get her and her brother both into the vets for a check up soon.
