Question
Is there anything you can give a dog that will deter misquitos from biting? Can you put misquito repelent on them?

Answer
Hi Cris!

K9 Advantix is a product you can get through your vet's office. It repels and kills mosquitoes before they can bite. It also repels and kills ticks before they can attach, and stops fleas from biting in less than 5 minutes and starts killing within an hour. You apply this product once a month to the skin behind the dog's neck.

The following products have been approved for use in dogs to prevent or repel mosquitoes. (Note: several of these are horse products that are also approved for use in dogs.)These products are applied topically, on "as needed" basis:

PreStrike Mosquito repellent for Dogs by Zodiac
Adams Flea and Tick Mist by VPL
Petguard gel by Virbac
Ultrashield by Absorbine
VIP Fly Repellent Ointment by VPL
Happy Jack Flea-Tick Spray by Happy Jack

Just applying a pyrethrin-based flea spray may be the safest method to try to repel mosquitoes on your dog, since Pyrenthrins will also kill gnats, flies, mosquitoes. Reapplication of the spray may be necessary for dogs that will spend much time outdoors.
(Pyrethrins is an insecticide made from chrysanthemum flowers, it's "natural" and it really works!)

Only approved mosquito repellents should be used on pets. Read the label first to determine if the product is approved for use in pets, and then follow label instructions for applications.

I hope this answers your questions!  If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!
