ear growth

Question
While spending time with my chihuahua, I noticed him shaking his head. The vet said it was a yeast infection. The head shaking never subsided, but I trusted my vet. Upon examination of his ear today I noticed a growth comming out of his ear canal! He wouldent let me examine it very well because it was obviously painful. My vet is unreachable for a few weeks. Do you think this is something that should be addressed right away? Could I give him half an asprine or something? I just feel aweful for him.

Answer
Kristen,

I would recommend you take your Chihuahua to another vet.  Masses in ears can be painful and can be caused my multiple things.  I cant tell you exactly what is going on but a veterinarian can.  Hopefully, even though your vet is unavailable for a few weeks, there is another veterinarian in your area that you can see.

Last, please do not give your pet any over the counter medications that are labelled for humans without a veterinarians recommendation.  Many of the the human OTC products including aspirin can hurt dogs because they metabolize drugs differently than we do.

Good luck to you both
