Question
9 days ago our 7-year-old daschund (PeeWee) exhibited signs of complete paralysis in his rear legs. An immediate trip to the local vet informed us that this is common to this breed. Is this true? One vet said that a disk or disks had ruptured and surgery was the only option, although the odds of recovery were 10-1, and with a price tag of $3,000. The second vet said to give him another week or two on bedrest and he will more than likely heal himself, after taking an xray and finding no sign of disk damage at all. (He is able to feel some pain at a deep tissue level) My question to you is: Is this a typical occurence in this breed? If so, what are the most common options in dealing with the problem? Thanks so much!

Answer
Is Pee-wee overweight?

Disc problems can be a problem for weiner dogs. BUT you would want to see a nerologist or a surgeon before being told you are having to do surgery.

You can do weight loss, rest, pain managment and restrict jumping in this breed to aid in better back health. Also joint suplements may help too.

good luck
