Question
The 3 month old female Golden Retrevier we were planning on bringing home tommorow has been diagnosed with "Puppy strangles."  She is being treated with pregnazone and seems to be responding well sofar.  My question is about any long term effects from this sickness and about the length and best manner of treatment.  Our young family has never had a dog before and I am a little nervous about getting in over our head with a sick puppy.

Answer
Strangles is realted to a Staph infection in puppies.  Prednisione takes down the swelling. He should also be on an antibiotic. I am not aware of any long term problems in a puppy that has recovered from strangles.  I would not get the puppy until it is completely over it.
