Question
QUESTION: So I came over to you again Jana,
This time I have A 10 month GSD Female, She is very play full and active but last few days she eating very few food, may be 5x lose her diet in 10 days, Now she don't want to eat food "or" Milk. When we try many times times she eat very little food, she looses her health continuously, just one symptom shows that a strange smell comes from her mouth, No direah or vomiting,
Our VET said that may its a infection and she written a prescription of {cefixime dispersible 100mg. 1-1 and peracitamol syp.} two times for a day for five days, three days passed away but no better result shows,
Can you tell me what is this problem and what is solution,
Regards
Sunil Trivedi

ANSWER: Hi Sunil,
first and foremost STOP the peracitamol!! It is highly poisonous to dogs. I can't believe your vet wrote you a prescription for it. It is highly toxic to a dogs kidneys. No one should EVER give a dog this stuff.

If your dog is having a breath issue then she might have a tooth problem. Maybe she has a baby tooth in the back that didn't come out or the roots are still in the gum. Maybe she has something caught in her teeth in the back. Dogs love to chew on things and it is very common for them to get stuff caught in their teeth. Any time a dog this young has bad breath you check the teeth first.

Second thing is kidneys. She needs to have her kidneys tested for function. A dog's breath will get very bad if their kidneys are not functioning properly or if they are failing.

You have to stop feeding her milk. Dogs cannot tolerate cow or goat milk. They are lactose intolerant after they are weaned from the mother dog.

So no more milk. I don't know what you are feeding her but are you telling me that she is vomiting five times a day or that she has vomiting 5 times in the last ten days. If that is so, then the food she is eating is not agreeing with her (or it's the milk) and her gut is irritated from the food.

Get her on some Science Diet Large Breed puppy growth and feed that to her until she is a year old.

I hope that you can get the vet to look at her teeth and test her kidneys if the teeth and gums are fine. Something needs to be investigated here...

Please let me know how she does...

QUESTION: Yes Jana,

My Vet Wrote this prescription of Syp. "Medler"
and syp's Formula is
Each 5 ml. contains:
[Paracetamol IP................125mg
Phenylephrine Hydrochloride.......5mg
Chlorphrine maleate Ip...5mg

Also he give me 10 tablet of cefixime dispersible 100mg. two times a day.
And my vet said that"give her 10 ml. two times in a day.
She don't vomiting. I am very worrying and i try to take her to a another VET.

I wondering that you told me that Paracetamol is highly poisonous to pet. Thanx for a valuable information.

ANSWER: Some vets give it in small doses, but it is not recommended.

From wikipedia:
A paracetamol-codeine product (trade name Pardale-V)[91] licensed for use in dogs is available on veterinary prescription in the UK.[91] It should be administered to dogs only on veterinary advice.[91] The main effects of toxicity in dogs is liver damage.[88][92][93][94] N-acetylcysteine treatment is efficacious in dogs when administered within a few hours of paracetamol ingestion.[88][90]

Aspirin is used as an anti-inflammatory in America as it is listed in their text books, with dosages. Paracetomol is also used as an anti-inflammatory, though not so commonly now. They were all that was available before the newer drugs. Paracetomol generally has it's toxic effect on the liver, causing irreversible damage, which is why those who overdose on paracetomol rarely survive. It can also cause renal tubular damage and is contra-indicated in patients with known kidney problems. It would be difficult to prove a connection with the paracetomol without knowing the state of your dogs kidneys prior to the problem and older dogs do develop kidney problems. It may have been an infection or some other cause which tipped the balance, I cannot comment without the full facts of the case. I also cannot make any comment on another vets case. If you feel you have a complaint, first discuss it with the practice you go to. If you feel they are giving no satisfaction then write to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. So while I am not a vet, and your vet should know this information, I would certainly NEVER give my own dog any type of acetaminophen.

I think it is wise to get a new vet. The current one doesn't seem to be addressing the immediate problem.

Please let me know how she does.

Answer
Sunil,
I apologize for the wait but had to go home from work before I could answer this question.

Sunil, I really have no way of knowing whether your dog will recover from this or not. It depends on WHY she is having liver issues at 10 months old. Did she get into some wild mushrooms? Did she get some Tylenol from someone? These are questions only you can answer.

Yes, the blood work here indicates some liver problems, but how serious is hard to tell since I am not there. Your new vet(s) sound like they are on the right track however. These treatments are good and designed to help her liver recover.

You should get her on a prescription food like L/D from Hills foods if you can get it over there. It is made to be easy on the liver while it is recovering.

Keep on the plan the new vet has her on and find her a diet easy on her liver. None of the blood work was way over the top, but it was certainly elevated.

So stick to the treatment they outlined for you and hope for the best. Your vets there are better equipped to tell you how she is doing by how she is looking, whether or not she is jaundiced or not, and how she is feeling overall.

I wish you both the best. Please keep me apprised on how she is doing...
