Cockatiel egg laying

Question
My one year old cockatiel with no mate just laid an egg a couple of days ago. she seemed not to be interested in it so I took it away. Today she layed another one. This one is bigger than the other and had a trace of blood on the shell. Is this normal?

Answer
Hi Karla!  Yes, this is definately normal.  Cockatiels do not mate to have eggs. The female lays the egg and then the male fertilizes it.  Right now, it's mating season, so your cockatiel will be laying eggs.  Just be sure that you have gravel for your bird to ingest and a cuddle bone in her cage, this will keep her calcium levels up, as laying eggs takes a lot of calcium from a bird's system.
It is good to take the egg away.  It is an unfertilized egg and will simply rot.  If the egg stays in the cage with the bird for a while, the bird will get extremely depressed, when they see the egg isn't hatching.  It is most important to take the egg immediately out of the cage as soon as you see it.
I hope this has helped, and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!
