Puppy broke foot really bad

Question
My Yorkie broke 2 of his toes and fractured the rest.  We took him to a er vet and they wanted to do surgery at the cost of $2,000.  Is there any way to splint the foot for it to heal? He is 61/2 months old and the whole leg is swollen. They gave him pain meds and anti-inflammatory meds.  I am going to take him to our regular vet tomorrow.  Can you help on what to do?  Thank you!

Answer
Unfortunately without seeing the type of break it is difficult to say if splinting would be an option however complex breaks often may require surgery to pin or plate the bones back together.  Splints are very difficult to use on the lower portion of a limb as there is not a portion beyond that to use as an anchor point unfortunately.  It is a good idea to consult with your regular veterinarian as a second opinion of the best way to proceed.

Best of luck to you and your canine companion.
