Hi Linda!
This is much the same as humans with disesases, i.e., one person may have a disease and it affects them only slightly but when they give it to someone else it has much more severe consequences. The impact of a disease on an individual depends not only on the disease but on the immune system of the individual affected. Some individuals have much healthier/more robust immune systems than others.
