Cat cannot meow.

Question
We have a 5 year old male Himalayan who after staying with 3 other cats for a couple of weeks came home without a meow. No voice. He tries to meow and his mouth takes the shape of a meow but nothing comes out. When stressed there is a "grawl" The other cats are house cats and 1 was a 6 mo old kitten. It is has been 3 months. We had him to a Vet and he was given lquid Doxycycline for 10 days. No difference. He in all other repects is normal (for a cat). The Vet also looked in the throat ,up to the larynx and found nothing. Any suggestions

Answer
Hey Saul,

I can't really give you that much advice but I would suggest you take him to another veterinarian to see if he is lethargic or depressed.

I have a friend who has four cats and two of them are quite talkative, while the other two do not verbalize with us. (One, an almost 20-pound guy, tries to meow, but it comes out as a little squeak - rather endearing, actually) Is this how it comes out when your cat tries to meow?

But you could  try "talking it up" with your Cat to see if he responds. Such as go to the library and get a CD with sounds of cats meowing, and played it for your cat.

Sometimes cats (like people) just need a bit of encouragement.
