dogs and spiders

Question
Hi!  I have a family of American Cockers, and the Boy is always letting curiosity get the better of him.  Tonight I noticed him exhibiting his 'bug hunter' behavior.  He reminds me of a cat when he does this, but is actually pretty talented - I have seen him catch flies in flight.  Tonight's victim is a spider.  I HATE spiders, and the fact that I got a tissue, caught it and put in a ziploc container is evidence of how much I love my dogs!!  I have tentatively id'ed it as a triangulate cobweb spider. He is not acting goofy (well, anymore than normal), and I don't think he was bitten, but now I am curious:  are there spiders dangerous to dogs in Indiana?  In my own research I have only been able to find info on human victims, not dogs.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Answer
Several spider species can result in skin irrations to extreme reactions in dogs who are bitten.  The brown recluse spider is more common in your region which can cause very serious problems in both animals and humans.  Many household spiders are fairly non-toxic and only cause mild irritation to a bite site.

Thanks for the question.
