Runt of the Litter

Question
We will soon be getting a Boston Terrier pup from a local, reputable breeder.  Since we are last pick in the litter, we may get a female that could be considered the "runt" of the litter.  She is about 2 pounds less than the other puppies, thouugh is eating well.  Is there any truth to the rumour that the smallest of the litter can often have health problems?  She is very feisty and outgoing as well (4 weeks old), and we are looking for a mellow dog.  Think her personality will remain the same as it is at 4 weeks?

Answer
Hi Susan!  Oh, you must be SOOO excited!  I have a little Shih Tzu...I just LOVE those little "smooshy faced" breeds hehe.
That rumor about the "runt" of the litter having health problems is just that...a rumor.  Any dog can have health problems whether they are the biggest pup out of the litter, or the smallest.  I truly wouldn't be concerned at all.  Believe it or not...My husband and I rescue animals, and all six of our cats were runts that were believed not to live.  We bottle fed each and every one of them.  One, who is now almost 2 years old, was only 3 days old when we took it in.  He is a healthy, robust cat with no problems.  Our dog, which is the only pet that we haven't rescued, we obtained the same way you are obtaining your pup. He was the runt as well, and is very healthy.  I would have no worries!
As for personality...puppies are going to be hyper for the first few months.  My dog was so hyper...always running around, ect.  By the time he was 4-6 months old, he calmed down a lot.  Now, at three years old, he is a lazy little guy.  He is completely content just napping on a pillow and he is also very affectionate.  He loves to be cuddled.  You can't judge a dog by how it is as a puppy.  Any puppy will be feisty.  It is a good sign, however, that the puppy is not timid.  Having no fear is a good quality!
I hope this helps and congrats on your upcoming addition!
