Question
i have a redtail boa and when i took it out a couple days ago it regurjitated a white substance that smelled what is it and how can i treat it or is it just natural

Answer
Hi Zach!

It is not natural for a snake to do this. If it has eaten a few days prior to this, it could be the remains of a meal not fully digested. This usually happens as a result of to cool a temperature or handling the snake soon after it eats. If this is not the case, the snake may have a respiratory condition. The stuff is a white creamy substance that smells bad. In any case it would be good to run the shower in the bathroom on full hot. get the room full of steam and hot then put the snake in the room in such a way that it can not contact the cold floor or any other cool surface. Leave the snake in there for about an hour and then return it to it's cage. In the meantime thoroughly clean the cage, water bowel and any other items in contact with the snake. Use 10 - 20 % Bleach and water mixture. Rinse well with hot water. The usual cause of this condition is to low a temperature or/and humidity. They need to be at 85F Daytime, 75F at night. At least 70% humidity from misting the cage daily. Boas catch colds and flu from humans as well. If you are sick stay away from them. Don't let anybody who is sick handle them. If this continues without improvement you will need to see a vet for a series of antibiotic shots. Try the bathroom treatment and repeat if necessary first. The shots are a series that are expensive and can be dangerous if not given or sized correctly.
