Question
Hi. First of all I would like to say thank you for your help. I have a
2 years old Golden Retriever. This summer she gave birth to 9 puppies.
One puppy  we had to put him to sleep because it came out with his
eyes opened, there was fluid in his head and the vet said that it was
an anomaly. The rest are ok. Around 1.5 months old, in one of the days
we weren't home for a few hours one of the puppies got bitten while
playing with other puppies on her back/beginning of the tail and she
develop a hematoma. We try to extract the fluid but it kept getting
bigger so we had to operate her. She recovered very vell, no scars at
all, coat grew back. After 1 months she develop the same hematoma on
both her front legs. Again, same treatment but no success and again we
had to operate her. Now we have another problem. The skin get easily
broken, and by that I can say that if she scratches she can get a hole
big enough to see the muscle inside. What can I do so she will not
have a problem like this. We got 8 puppies to grow and that make a big
hole in our budget. I know is urgent to have a set of test. But I
would like to know your opinion. She eats, drink, poop and pee
normally. She is very active...no signs of illness whatsoever. All I
see is wounds and she is still a puppy, the skin get rupture so
easily. At her age she should have been normal, not with stitches and
operations. The mother is very healthy(last winter she was swimming on
the sea at -4F and she gave birth of 9 puppies, no health problems at
all). What is the matter with this puppy? Please help me.

Regards,

Elena Ruiz

Answer
You should isolate this puppy from the rest and feed it separately using a high quality puppy food.  There are some collagen diseases that make the skin tear easily and if the skin is that fragile, this could be a problem for life.  If the puppy is developing hematomas, then there may be a blood clotting problem as well.
