my dog eating cat feces

Question
Hello, I've never had a dog before so this is new to me.  He's eating the cat feces that is left in our yard.  I've talked to some people and they say that every dog they've ever had (especially big dogs) do this.  My first question is; Why do they eat it?  and the next question is; Is there a way to curb or even break this behavior? Do you need some back ground on what kind of dog he is?  He's part bull mastiff and part rottweiller so he's a good size dog.  Other than this problem, he really is a good dog.

Answer
Hi Debbie!  Unfortunately, eating cat feces is VERY common, whether it's outdoors, or out of a litterbox in your own home.  Cat feces are delicasies to dogs everywhere.  No one really does know why.  It may have something to do with their scent, and/or the dog eating the cat's feces out of a sign of dominance over the cat.
To break this behavior, it may be beneficial to keep the dog on a leash for a while when you take him in the yard.  Everytime he goes near the cat feces, tell him "no!", and he should catch on.  I hope this helps and congrats on your new dog!
