Swollen glands?

Question
My 13-year old cat has been somewhat lethargic for two days now.  He is eating, although about half as much as normal, and has taken to sleeping in places that are not normal for him to sleep in.  While I was brushing him today he was purring and appeared happy until I changed to petting him.  It was then that I noticed his rear end seems a bit swollen.  The anal region itself looks normal but the area above his rear legs toward the anus on both sides, is enlarged and he was not happy to have me touch him there.  I know he went to the litter area this morning although I am not sure if he used it.  Any ideas for me?

Answer
The anal glands can become impacted and eventually infected at times and need to be
manually expressed, and treated if infected.  This could be rather uncomfortable for
him which could certainly lead to decreased appetite.  What seemed lethargy may perhaps be unwillingness to move because of this discomfort.

That being said there are many causes of lethargy and inappetance in cats, and the anal glands if impacted could be in addition to a metabolic or other problem.  I would suggest a visit to your veterinarian.  They can check and express the anal glands and do a full examination to make sure there is nothing bothering your feline friend.

The best of luck with getting him back to his happy and healthy self.
