Question
My cat is 12,2 years ago she was diagnosed with a hyper thyroid disorder she is on Tapozole and doing well with her weight. Since the summer time I have been having a problem with her on and off scratching so bad she is causing sores and making herself bald. The first time it flared up I bathed her in prep-scrub and I do pick off all her scabs, and them we put her on a pred(steroid)for 14 days, used cortismoothe shampoo on her, got rid of all her sores and scabs her hair grew back and then again this week it flared up again.

Any Suggestions would be Greatly Appreciated

Thank You

Answer
In addition to hyperthyroidism, she may have a skin allergy that causes the itching and scabs. She should be on a good topical insecticidal medication like Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution.  I use an injection called Depo Medrol for this miliary dermatitis reaction because it is a long acting, very low dose steroid that cats tolerate well.  If the cat has ear mites, this can cause skin disease as well and should be checked.
