Moving with an older cat

Question
My husband and I are getting a divorce and I am moving about 4 blocks away.  We have a 12-year-old, indoor-outdoor cat.  This is the only home she knows, but I am her "person."  I provide all of her care, and she hardly allows anybody else to even pet her.  I want to take her with me, but I'm afraid the move will be too traumatic for her.  Should I take her with me or leave her with my (soon-to-be-ex) husband and hope for the best?  If I take her with me, do you have any advice for making the transition easier for the cat?

Answer
I am sorry that you are going through a difficult time in your life.
The biggest problem I see in this scenario is the possibility of the cat wondering back over to your old house when she is let out at the new place. That is very likely to happen. You will end up going back over to your old house to collect her more than you would like. Plus, there is the inherent danger of her wandering that far through traffic, etc. Particularly worrisome for a cat her age. Can you take her to your new place and make her an indoor cat? That would be the best option I can see. That way she is with the person she is attached to and she is safe.
Good luck.
