MPL surgery

Question
QUESTION: My 10 month old Cavalier has MPL on one knee. It keeps on slipping in and out of socket. She still runs, walks up the stairs and jumps. She does limp pretty much every time we go on a walk but so far she has been able to put it back into place by herself..My Vet recommended surgery. I'm concerned about her young age and any side effects especially when he can guaranteed the surgery will be 100% successful. My questions are: is she too young and if we wait to have surgery is that going to mess up her knee ever more? Or should be just have her on intiinflammatory?
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Lia:  I am glad you wrote to me.  Give it some time, it may repair itself!  Also, the operation is not 100% guaranteed to work. Many times they have to "go in" two times!
Also, one little jump can mess up the entire operation.

Here is what I would do:

First, make sure she is on a good food.... Keep her weight down to an average weight.  Take her off puppy food and put her on Adult Innova dog food.  Innova is an excellent food that can be found in most stores.  If you can't find it let me know.

Next, add some salmon oil to her diet.  Give her 1 teaspoon per day of Pure Alaska Salmon oil.  ( excellent for her joints)

See if you can place her on ONE baby asprin per day ( 81 mg)...
Ask your vet if that would be ok ????

Last, Please start her onto some NuVET Plus - Excellent supplement and will help to reduce or lessen joint problems.  Helps with over 50 ailments that can hit your baby.
Here is the link for NuVET Plus
( cost is about .55 cents per day )

QUESTION: Hello Marie
thanks you sooo much for your quick respond...
I do have my dog on Innova food.(recommended from the breeder). She takes Innova Evo small bites..Should I switch her to Innova Adult already?
Also I have been giving her NuVet PLus vitamins (again recommended from her breeder)since she brought her home. I have a hard time giving it to her she does not like it. I tried breaking up the pill and mixing it with her food but she's too smart, she eats the food and leaves the pills alone..So most of the pills are wasted.Any suggestions? I thought about getting the Nujoint Plus but I'm afraid she won't take it. Should I keep her on Nuvet PLus or change it to Nujoint PLus?
Thanks again for your expertise..
Lia

Answer
Hi Again:  Glad to hear she has been on the NuVET Plus - You can get the powder form of NuVET Plus -  If she won't eat it they will REFUND your money....
http://www.nuvet.com/81098  ( Just let them know you want the NuVET Plus Powder)
As for the NuJoint, it would be wonderful if she could take this.  They don't have a powder in the NuJOINT... I wonder if you can place it into some peanut butter/

If she is on the Innova Evo, that's great....!!!!  We want to keep her weight down to below average to average.  BECAUSE of the leg...
Go with 1/2 the Innove EVO and do 1/2 the Innova Senior.  She will do fine with the two mixed.  Make sure she is off of PUPPY formula by 12 to 13 months old.

Give your friends the bottle of NuVET that she won't eat.  I bet they will be happy to try it.  Again, if you order thru this link and she doens't eat it, they will refund you.  All you need to do is ask for a refund.  It is rare that you can't get them to eat the powder form.  It is very good and most dogs love it mixed into the dry or wet foods.  YOU can also mix it into some cottage cheese.

BEST wishes to YOU!

Let me know how she does on the powdered form and the NuJOINT, too.
NuJoint will make a big difference.  I hope you can figure out how to get it into her.  Be creative...!!!
