Question
Hey,we have brought a nine week puppy two week ago and it started having diarrhea, we didn't think it was serious as new changes for the puppy, yet about four days ago we noticed some drops of blood in his diarrhea, we got really worried and wanted to go to a vet check but we cant afford it. In his documents it says that he was wormed vet checked and had two vaccinations. Now we found out two days ago that he pooped small white like a string worm with some drops of blood around it. We realized he must of have worms so we bought him worm medicine 'single dose wormer' and gave him a tablet. He still had diarrhea but no there was no signs of blood. Now today In the morning he pooped green watery stuff with what seemed to be lumps of white stuff in it with still some drops of blood. Is his system cleaning itself? was it dead worms? Were really worried, his behavior is fine ,he's energetic and happy. Today we gave him one more tablet as he was scratching his ears ,so it is likely he still has worms. Also i gave him a bit of rice hoping his diarrhea would be better. Please can you advise us what to do were really worried, and would you be able tell us to go for a vet treatment last only is it's really needed as we don't have enough money at the moment to afford it. By he way the puppy is West highland terrier nearly two months old.
Thank you
Meg

Answer
Often puppies must be wormed more than once to fully clear them.  The egg stage of the worms is often resistant to dewormers so that they should be remedicated about 3 weeks later, give timing for those eggs to hatch and mature, but attempting to rid them before a whole new batch of eggs is produced.  Thus if you have just wormed him I would recommend doing so again in about 3 weeks.

Yes you will often see diarrhea and passed worms after administration of the dewormer, especially during the first day.  If this continues one for more a couple days though I would at least bring a sample to your veterinarian.  They may be willing to test the sample even if you can not afford an appointment for a small fee.

Best of luck to you and your puppy.
