Is my dog dying?

Question
My 13 yr old husky was healthy and athletic up until three days ago.  She had been having nose bleeds for a few weeks and  all of a sudden she just began standing in one place.  When we woke up in the morning she was still standing.  He condition worsened and she began staggering and falling down.  Eventually, she began to sleep in short increments. We took her to the vet to get blood work done. Day two It appeared she was improving taking small walks but still staggering.  She would eat and drink if hand fed.  Last night she began walking into walls and trying to climb into corners but she appeared not able to see.  This morning she appears to be dead but she is still breathing.  At first I thought this might be vestibular disease.  I think she is to the point of no return.  I am very close to putting her down but that was the last thing on earth that I wanted to do.  What should I do?

Answer
This sounds like a very grave situation. Based on the signs you are describing I am concerned that she may have a brain tumor. The nose bleeds also imply that she may have a platelet or other clotting deficiency. Their is a disease called Immune-mediated Thrombocytopenia that can cause the platelet levels to be very low, hence the blood cannot clot leading to bloody noses, etc. She may have bled into her brain or brainstem. Other neorologic diseases that can cause these signs are Bacterial meningitis, Tick-borne diseases such as Ehrlichiosis or Immune-mediated disease of the brain. The way you describe her current state I am advising you to take her to a referral hospital immediately where they can perform the proper testing for these diseases or where she can be euthanized as it sounds like she is suffering at this point.
I am sorry she is so ill. Thirteen years is a very long time to have a beloved canine companion. I wish you both the best.
