Why is my cat shedding so much?

Question
My cat is the healthiest cat you have ever seen. He plays outside and isn't fat (unlike my other cat). But recently I have noticed that my cat has been shedding a lot lately (actually this has been a problem for years I just wasn't worried about it). He eats plenty of food and I know that could be one of the problems. I don't know what food my mom buys him but my fat cat also has the same problem. What is up? I really don't want cat hair over me every time I pick Mister up. Even when I pet him he sheds!!!!!! What can I do to fix this?

Answer
Well Juniper,
Cats shed out their winter coats with its denser undercoat for a lighter summer coat this time of year, and they also shed out the summer coat when they grow a winter one back on.
Cats that are inside all of the time tend to shed all of the time because their internal clocks aren't sure if it is summer or winter- so they are constantly replacing their hair coats.
One of the major factors is diet. Cheap diets like Purina, Whiskas, Friskies, etc, pretty much anything you buy at the grocery store, is going to contribute to the shedding.

I have two cats now but at one time I had nine all at once. They only time my cats shed much is when they are shedding out a coat for summer or winter and even then it is a very short shedding period.

The reason for that is because my cats and one dog all eat Hills products. The cats both eat Science Diet for senior cats and the dog eats a weight diet made by Hills.
My cats coats are shiny, healthy and are not all over my clothes. I wear a lot of black and the most hair I get on me is when my dog who is white and black, rubs on my black pants. Even then it's only a few hairs.

Science Diet is formulated to prevent excess shedding because the animals are getting superior nutrition and thus their hair coats are less prone to shed a lot.
It doesn't stop shedding completely, but they are not shedding like your cat seems to be. Science Diet may seem to cost more at the start but after three weeks your cats won't be eating as much so you will save money. They are getting so much nutrition with less food that they don't need to eat as much or as often.

Ask your mom to give it a try. If you don't notice a change in your cats coats after about a month (usually three weeks) then you can take the empty bag back and get your money back.
But I can guarantee you won't. After feeding and recommending it for over 28 years I don't know any one that has ever taken a bag of food back.
Get a bag of the Maintenance for Sensitive skin or regular Maintenance or the Light and let me know how they are doing in a month.
