Question
I have taken in my parents 18 yr.old poodle mix dog (they have both passed away). Yesterday she started bleeding slightly from the nose.  When she sneezes, it splatters. Should I be alarmed?

Answer
Hi Debbie!  First, I would like to say that I am so very sorry for the loss of your parents.  I know how trying and difficult these times will be. I think it's very wonderful that you have taken in their dog.  I'm sure they both appreciate that so much.
As for that little fur-baby...
I would definately recommend a vet visit as soon as possible.  Bleeding of the nose in canines can be caused by many things.  Simply bumping the nose, an upper respiratory infection, allergies, foreign bodies, or anemia with clotting deficiancies.  It would be most beneficial to have a veterinarian take a look at it and treat accordingly.  Blood work will most likely need to be done to check the value of the red blood cells, which will determine whether or not there is an anemia present.  X-rays may also be done to determine whether or not their is a foreign body in the nasal canal (like a cycst, pallop, ect.), which may need to be removed.
Since it is Sunday, and a veterinarian may not be accessible to you, you can apply a cool compress to her nose for a few minutes, a few times today, until you can get her into the vet, hopefully tomorrow.
I wish I could be of more help.
Again, I am so sorry for your losses.  Hang in there and keep your chin up!
I'm thinking of you,
Hilary
