QuestionI have a year-=old rat terrier spayed female. She has smelled bad ever since she was a young pup. I have tried changing foods, supplements, etc. It is not her ears or teeth or anal glands. She smells bad even immediately after a bath. Help!
AnswerHave you had this smell evaluated by a vet? Most smells from dogs come from there sources:
Breath can be from teeth, bad gums or their stomach. Bad food causes that.
Skin: bad food, allergies, skin problems such as seborrhea, flea allergies, etc.
Digestive gases: again, bad food, such as foods full of cheap meats and fillers,Purina, Nutro, etc.
Anal glands: these can be leaky and smell horrible even if you don't see anything. This is the worst smell of all.
Ears: Malethezzia (yeast)infections, bacterial infections will cause a smell that spreads to the hair coat.
These are the things you need to have a vet evaluate. Smells just don't come from nothing.
I would put her on a high quality food such as Science Diet Sensitive skin or stomach formula. That could help a great deal as it is so digestible that is forms very little stool.
Other than that, I would certainly take her in for a very thorough check up and get to the bottom of this.
