English bulldog: incessant licking

Question
Hi Dr. Connell:
We recently rescued this 3-yr-old English bulldog who is extremely sweet-tempered, but just started this incessant lip licking & air biting spells. It doesn't seem to be prompted by anything in particular, and he doesn't have anything stuck in his mouth. Could this be stress-related? I'd love to have your professional opinion. Thanks in advance for your help. Video clip here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7790378217421692032&hl=en

Answer
First of all Tiffany, please note that I am not a doctor. My profile clearly states that I am a Vet Tech and as such I cannot diagnose anything.

I can offer the advice however that while there are many causes for this kind of behavior, petite mal seizures is one of the main ones that stands out.
Stress might be a factor also, but it is what brings on the seizures.
You will have to have a vet look him over and determine if that indeed is what these are.

Excessive licking can be related to other mental issues as well, and as you said, stress, trauma and related issues can be at the root of them.
All said and done, this guy needs a good check up at the vets. Make sure he is also tested for heartworms- very important!

I hope you can find the answers- please let me know how he is doing and what you find out about this problem.
