Question
I have a male 3 month old pup that doesn't bark. Normal in all other respects. He is the largest of a 5 pup litter, one of which was stillborn. I kept him and a female. The two that left are fine, along with the female I kept. It was a normal, first time pregnancy for the 3 year old mama dog. They are heinz 57 with a noticeable pit appearance. I was told the mama was predominantly pi/lab, and the daddy is just a mix.
Brutus, the pup, whines, but I have never heard him bark. I am 58 and have been around many dogs thru the years and this one puzzles me. I have not taken him to the vet yet, due to financial concerns, but I will have to soon for some shots, including rabies. I will administer the 7in1 but a vet has to do the rabies for certification for a tag.
Thanks for the help you can give me, Phil

Answer
Most puppies don't bark until they are between 3-5 months old. Then it always surprises them when they do.
Please make sure these pups are on heartworm medication now, or they will test positive for heartworm when he is 8 months old.

They need to be started at 6 weeks old.Oklahoma is a hot spot for heartworms and they will get it if they are not on it. It shortens their life-span and makes them miserable before they even grow old.

And if you get her spayed at 4 months old then you needn't worry about an unwanted litter of pups. The male can be neutered at 6-7 months old. But get her done before she is 6 months old.

He will bark, just give him time.:-)
