Question
I am caring for a homeless Chow and her babies that are living in the woods. the pups are about 7 days old. The mother has no hair at all, bright pink skin, crusty areas. I guess she has mange. She is emaciated and I am sure must have worms. What should I give her and her puppies for worms, how much and how do I give it to the babies? Should I start them on it now? Is there anything that I can put on the mothers skin for mange? How will the babies be treated if they get the mange? Thank you for any advice.

Answer
You can get Piperazine at the store to cover roundworms, but you should only deworm the mother at this point...the puppies shouldn't be given any until 2 weeks of age (but your best bet is to read the label instructions for safety).

You can use a LymDip to help treat the mange, but we usually give Ivermectin injections.  I would highly advise that you take all of them to the vet for an examination and then you can get appropriate medication as it is very likely that the mother will also need antibiotics for secondary skin infection.
