KENNELL COUGH

Question
I have 3 labs (one of each color); on Tuesday, Jan 2, 2005 they dug under our fence and ran off.  Our 5 year old black lab, Jenny was picked up by animal control and because the administrative offices are closed on Sundays and Mondays, we could not get her back until Tuesday.  About 3 days ago she developed this cough that sounds like she is trying to get a hairball up.  It seems to be going away but I am not sure if it is Kennell cough.  My question is whether or not I should take her to get treatment even though it seems to be going away and if she can give it to our other two dogs.

Answer
Hi Elissa!  I am so happy that your dogs found their way back to you safe and sound!
I too would be concerned of Kennel Cough.  I would have your veterinarian physically examine her just to be sure.  Kennel Cough can develop into pneumonia.  If this is Kennel Cough, if will be transmittable to your other dogs.
A simple antibiotic for all will cure the problem!
I hope this helps,
Hilary
