Do you know anything about raccoons?

Question
We have a baby raccoon about 1 1/2 month old who will not stop sucking on us. When we deny her, she frantically sucks on her stomach. Any suggestions? Thanks, Emilie

Answer
Raccoons are not weaned until they are around 7-9 weeks old. Yours is only 5 weeks old. We weaned our raccoon at the proper age and he still did some suckling on his stomach also, but not frantically.

My question is where did you find a raccoon? They are not easy to raise and if you are not a wildlife rehabilitator then I suggest you find one and turn her over to them. Raccoons have heavy nutritional needs and special care to be successfully raised to adulthood then released. If you bought this coon from a  farm that raises them I suggest you contact a local rehabber for instructions on how to raise one properly.
And be careful. If you found her, there is a huge penalty for having one. (sometimes $10,000).

They are wild by nature and when they reach two years old they become sexually mature and can be very violent. I know, I raised one for release.

I am adamant about this because I have been given several animals over the years that were raised by 'well intentioned' people only to have them die because they were not feeding and handling them correctly. They knew something was wrong but waited too long to bring them to me.

So please rethink this and get her to a rehab center if that applies.
She still needs to be on a bottle now anyway with added food being given slowly. Call a rehabber.
