QuestionMy vet gave both of my yorkies exams today and indicated that my 1 1/2 year old has Grade 5 Luxating Patella and that my 11 month old has Grade 1, he gave both dogs an injection of Vetalog. Is this a customary treatment?
AnswerKathy: I have never heard of giving this injection to a grade 1.
Now, the grade 5 I can understand. This is a very potent steroid category drug. Be careful about future usage of this drug on the Grade 1 baby yorkie.
Luxating Patellas at grades 1,2, and 3 are very mild and do not need surgery..( most of the time)//// Now, grades 4 and 5 many times do need surgery. A grade 5 can repair itself over time but will have severe arthritis in that patella area. The dog would have to be on anti-inflam drugs or steroids. Never do anything major on a level 1 or level 2 luxating patella. Many times, the level 1 and 2s can pop the patella back into place by a good stretch. All levels of this problem have a good chance of Arthritis as they grow older.

Just be informed and read up on the drug.
