surviving dog after the death of another dog

Question
I currently have 2 chocolate labs (Reno is 1yr old and Alex is 10).  Reno and Alex have been together since Reno was 8 weeks old - they even sleep together.  Alex is in very poor health and we are having her put down.  I was wondering if we should have the vet take care of everything or if we should bring her home afterwards and put her in their room for Reno to find and recognize that she has died?  We want to make this transition as easy as possible for Reno.

Answer
Oh Patty, I am so terribly sorry you are going through this.  I know how heartbreaking this kind of situation is.  It's so hard to lose a loved pet.  It would be best for Reno to not see Alex after she has passed away.  This could upset Reno and cause exteme anxiety over the situation.  Reno will be wondering where she is, but after a while he will adjust.  I can't tell you how sorry I am that you have to go through this.  Please know that I am thinking of you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
Hang in there!
Thinking of you and yours,
Hilary
