HELP, My dog is dying - Osteosarcoma

Question
First, I want to thank you for being here to answer some questions for me.

I am absolutely broken hearted and sad.  My 10 year old Australian Shepard/mix, Ozzie, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma last Sept, 2003.  He was in good health with a good quality of life, so I decided on the amputation and the chemo.  Now it is 10 months later.  On or about the 4th of July I noticed a change in his personality and his eating.  I took him in to my Vet., they took chest x-rays and, as told to me in the beginning last year, the cancer has spread to his chest, currently with 4 tumors pressing on his lungs.  My vet told me that "it is not time yet, you will know when it is"  It is so so so heartbreaking to watch my Ozzie Boy failing.  He is breathing somewhat hard, but he doesn't look uncomfortable, but, he certainly doesn't eat like he used to.  I have been trying to tempt him with 1/2 wet Dog food & 1/2 cooked ground turkey or ground beef.  He will take a few bites, then loose interest, and if I hand feed him, he will accept it.....for just a short while.  That is one of 'many' of my worries.  Could you possibly give me some advise on what I could make him that would tempt him to eat & enjoy, for the last few days/weeks I have him??  I didn't mention that over all this, he also has an abscessed back molar and I am currently giving him meds for that along with a pain med.  I also don't know how to tell the difference if he is in pain because of his cancer or because of his abscessed tooth??  And possibly that is why he doesn't want to eat much because his tooth hurts??  The vet. indicated that he may have a few weeks to a month, but I also don't want him in pain and I will not allow him suffer.  I just want to make these last days happy and comfortable for him and give him some yummy food that he won't stick his nose up with.

Thanks in advance for your advise.

Answer
Dear Mimi,

My heart goes out to you and your Ozzie, your story has brought tears to my eyes.By the sounds of it Ozzie has had a wonderful life with you and has been through rough times, I am sure that he thanks you for all that you've done for him. It is hard to say if his appetite decrease is from his cancer or his tooth, but I think that his sickness in general has made him act this way. If I were in your shoes, I would treat him to any, I mean any foods that he has enjoyed in the past. I recommend that you consult your veternarian first, just to be safe.
I believe that showering Ozzie with lots of love, hugs and kisses will make his last days happy with you! I also have lost a special dog, and I tried to spend quality time with him on his last days and it gave him comfort as well as myself. Just remember he will be out of pain and always with you in your heart. Please give Ozzie millions of special kisses for me!

Please hang in there and keep me posted! You will be in my thoughts,
Nicole
