moderate hair loss and thyroid

Question
Tracker is my five year old spayed female beagle. There are about five patches on her where there is noticable hair loss. The smallest is the size of a quarter (on her nose) and the largest is about 2" X 4" (on her side). Is there a link between this hair loss and a low thyroid level? What else might cause moderate hair loss, Her diet consists entirely of NeutriPro lamb and rice formula and Old Mother Hubbard assorted flavors buscuits. She seems to be otherwise in excellent health.

Answer
Hi Jack,
That's right hypothyroidism in dogs can cause skin issues. I would try to make an appt. with a Vet. in your area and take her in for a check-up. They will do some bloodwork checking her thyroid levels. They will see if it is too high or too low and put her on some medication. If it is thyroid related you will soon see her skin improve and she will feel much better also. Take care and good luck with your girl.
