Question
my lab, gorgeous, is 13yrs old. She was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago, and has a mix of short acting and medium acting insulin twice a day.Her kidney function tests were done 3 days ago and are within range, but about 3 months ago, they were high, so she went through abou 10 days of saline drips. i feed her homemade food, but am concerned about whether i am doing it all correctly. Keeping the diabetic and the kidney situations in mind, would be great if you could tell me a basic ok diet for her. Many thanks !!

Answer
My sincere apologies for the delay.  I have been dealing with some health issues and fallen terribly behind.

There are many variations for homemade diets, however this one would be an appropriate starter base diet.

2-1/2 pounds ground chicken or turkey
2 cups uncooked barley
2 cups uncooked brown rice
1 cup green vegetable (spinach, broccoli, green beans, etc)
10 cups water

You can adapt to the amount of servings you wish to make at once.  I hope this helps.  Best of luck to you and your canine companion.
