Question
My grand daughter has a 11 mo. old female Ridgeback. She was in heat about 2 mo. ago and two of her nipples are enlarged-- is this a problem or leftover from estrus?  She is fed Science diet for large breeds and receives no table food yet often throws up yellow gastric juices-- can you suggest a cause and solution?  She has a genetic heart problem but does not show any effects yet.

Answer
After a heat cycle, the nipples can be slightly swollen; however, they should be equally as swollen.  Try to see if you can squeeze anything from the nipple.  There is a possibility that she has an infection (mastitis).

For the vomiting of bile, it is probably due to over-acid stomach  or sensitive stomach.  I would recommend smaller meals throughout the day and especially a snack before bed.  Consider Science Diet Sensitive Stomach instead of large breed.  Or switch to a more natural diet such as Nature's Variety PRAIRIE that is void of preservatives, by-products, corn and dyes.  Also, give several tablespoons of yogurt with meals and supplement diet with digestive enzymes.  I prefer Dancing Paws Shake 'N Zyme.   If it continues, you can give Pepcid AC tablet before bed.
