Losing hope

Question
Yesterday morning, my wife yelled frantically that my dog
was flailing on the ground and could not get up.  This was
after he somehow got down the stairs and to the back door.
I rushed him to the Vet.  When we got there, I noticed that
he was drooling excessively his eyes were foggy, pupils
dilated and he had no response to my voice (usually his
ears perk and his eyes would look at me no matter how
miserable he is).  The day prior, he had eaten raw chicken
and some plastic off a child's toy (swallowed whole).
Originally the vet thought some kind of toxin or small
chance of obstruction.  The blood work revealed only mild
elevations in only a few of the indicators and normal
levels in the rest.  The X-Ray didn't show anything that
showed any obvious symptoms of an obstruction.  So, he is
now stumped, we do not believe the dog hit his head or ate
anything else.  So...toxin, head trauma, stroke, tumor,
something else?  Please help if you have any ideas.

Answer
Dave,

I hope that by the time you receive this reply you have an answer to your questions.  I think that your veterinarian is on the right track.  Unfortunately, diagnosis can be very elusive and a lot of the time we spend scratching our heads and not having a clue as to what is happening.  Especially when there are so few clues.

I wish I had ideas to give you, but I have even a fuzzier view of the clues without the physical exam findings, radiographs and bloodwork results to look at. I can only hope that your dog has either started to recover or has given you another more specific clue so a diagnosis can be made.

Good Luck to you both
