Question
Is it possible to medicate my brittany spaniel to become mellow?

Answer
Julie,
Yes, there are various medications available that are intended to support dogs with behavior problems and hyperactivity. However, they are considered drastic and most veterinarians will not prescribe them unless there is a real concern for the dog and its safety. Discuss obtaining a referral to see a veterinary behavior specialist that would be able to offer you more information about these medications, and if they are right for him.
The good news is; there are other measures you can take to help in calming him. First, depending upon his age, as he comes to mature; his energy levels will decrease. A dog of his size is considered fully developed mentally, and physically, by the age of 18 months.
Also, discuss having him neutered with his regular veterinarian. Although the indicated age for this procedure is 6 months, it can be preformed at a younger age without any ill effects. The hormone levels in his body will begin to decrease and help in curing any sexual related behaviors and hyper activity.
Additionally look to his diet, as many commercial dog foods are full of excess sugars and flavorings that can very well be the cause of his high energy levels. On the same subject, many treats made for dogs also have high levels of unnecessary sugar. Read the labels of the foods and treats you provide him and limit these products.
Finally, in most cases where I have people address me with concerns about there dogs having too high an energy level, the dog is not receiving sufficient amounts of exercise and mental stimulation, which will cause them to suffer behavioral problems and anxieties. Increase the time he is allowed outside and off leash. Find a dog park that you can frequent at least 3 times weekly, and begin to provide him with several 10 to 15 minute walks daily. If you are watching TV at night get him involved in a fetch and chase game with a ball or one of his favorite toys. If you have free weekends become involved in your local obedience club and try to train him to master an agility course. Although he may not come to be the best at it, (or he could very well excel at it), it will work in alleviating any and all, build up energy he may have.
In conclusion, when he is left alone for long periods of time, provide him with "busy" toys to help stimulate him and alleviate anxieties. Place all his toys in your dirty laundry hamper to retain your scent and place them out for him daily, rotating them often. Your scent provides him comfort when your away and will help keep his interest in his toys and not your furniture etc. Place rope type toys in the freezer wet overnight to provide him with a fun frozen treat, and place a finger full of peanut butter or cream cheese inside a rubber toy causing him to spend a great deal of time trying to retrieve the tasty treat.
I would be more than happy to address the medications, as well as provide you a listing of recommended foods, if you request so and get back to me. Keep in mind that Brittney's are noted for their hyperactivity and were bred to have high levels of energy. These dogs are able to run for hours on end in search of fowl, when used as bird dogs. If you feel that this dog is too hyper, than perhaps he is not the best breed choice for your lifestyle.
Again, I can provide you additional information, if you get back to me and give me more information about the specifics of your concern. I hope I have been able to offer you some insight as to this problem. Do not hesitate to get back to me with any addtion questions or concerns.
