QuestionOur 2 year old shih tzu scratches herself constantly. Fleas have not been a problem or apparent. Her skin appears dry and flaky. She is bathed weekly with flea/tick shampoo and/or baby shampoo, followed by hair conditioner. Our vet has found nothing to cause the itching, and periodically she receives a cortozone shot which gives short time (1 week) reflief. Can we supplement her canned dog food diet with anything to help this situation?
AnswerFor the dry, flaky skin and itching you can use something called Omega 3 fatty acids added to the food. YOur vet has this in one of many forms. It can be in a capsule, a granular form, or in a liquid. These take about a month to get into the skin and they will help the dry, flaky skin. They will improve the itching because these types of oils do not create the inflammation in the skin when the skin is reacting to allergens as do some of the other dietary fatty acids.
