blood in feces

Question
We have an English bulldog that is 9 weeks old that just got here from Budapest, Hungary.  He is very active and is jumping, playing, etc.  He has had very loose stools since arriving here.  There was some in his kennel when we picked him up from the airport.  He did spend the night at the New York airport while in transit.  His feces has gone from loose to diarrhea to green mucus and blood in them.  Today is the first time we have seen the blood.  The blood is bright red in color.  He has pooped blood on four different occasions this morning in a 3 hour period.  The amount that he is excreting is not substantial, however worrisome. The puppy is eating what I feel would be an extreme amount for a puppy.  Just for the sake of knowledge:  I measured out what would be the daily portion for a puppy his weight: 1 and one half cups of puppy chow. He consumed the whole entire amount at one setting.  He is on the Iams puppy chow.  He is going in for a puppy check tomorrow at 0800.  I don't want to wait if it is something that cannot wait.  I am concerned but it doesn't all make since to me because he is very active, alert and is not sleeping in inappropriate amount of time or anything.  Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Answer
Bright red or frank blood is from the vessels around the rectum (inside) being irritated and rupturing. This is very common with ongoing diarrhea. The diarrhea itself is probably stress-induced from all the flying and changes in food and routine.

You can add some boiled rice to his food to slow it down some. After a while it should taper off but worming him is also a factor. He will need wormer from the vet. Get him started on his monthly heartworm pill with the extra wormers in them and that should be all he will need every month unless he has an extremely heavy worm burden.

Being from overseas he should be given a broad spectrum wormer to start with. He should also have a fecal check for coccidia, which isn't a worm but a protozoan disease that causes massive diarrhea.

Giardia is also another protozoan disease he could have picked up over there.

As far as his diet goes, Iams is okay but not the best choice out there. Hill's Science Diet large breed puppy growth is what he should be on. Bulldogs are considered large breeds as the males can reach 60 lbs. So he isn't on a food that is addressing his nutritional needs when it comes to his adult size and his skeletal and joint needs.

Science Diet first designed the Large Breed line after years of research on what was causing so many hip problems in large dogs.
Theirs was the first formula that addressed the issue of the calcium/phosphorus ratio.

So after you get his diarrhea settled down I would slowly wean him over onto the Large Breed Puppy Growth. And he should be eating three meals a day- not one giant one. You need to measure out his food then divide that amount by three feedings- two if you work. Put the second on in a baggie and give him that one in the evening-after he sits pretty for his food.

Don't feed him treats or snauages or any of that stuff. He needs good wholesome food and if you want you can give him one large carrot for his treat now. His teeth aren't large enough to gnaw on it but he will have something he like to play with and then he will eat them later. They are great for teething also.

I hope this helps and that his diarrhea is over with soon. Let me know how he is doing in a few days.
