Question
Hi, My 5 month old cat, Katie, was spayed Monday. She slept the first day and since then is very active, running and playing. We noticed that her stitches came out (although we made a collar hood for her) and the incision is open and pink around it. My vet didn't even want to see her because she said that she has 4 layers of skin and it will heal. She also prescribed antiobiotics. What should I do? Will the incision heal without stitches?

Answer
Hi Mary!
Wow....I am upset with reading your question.  The thing that I am upset about is that your veterinarian told you that the incision will heal without the stitches.  It won't.  This needs to be re-sutured ASAP.  A horrible infection will occur if this is not re-sutured, antibiotics or not.
Something to respond to your veterinarian with...
If the incision could heal without stitches...why did you stitch up the incision in the first place?
Cats have 4 layers of skin? I'm taking it then, that you didn't have to go through all the skin to get to the uterus to spay her?
Obviously you can see from the above questions, something is definitely not right here.  It doesn't matter how many layers of skin a cat has...all the layers need to be cut through to remove the uterus, as the uterus is an internal organ.  This needs to be flushed out and sutured immediately.  You may want to take her to a different veterinarian and talk to them about this situation.  This is definitely not appealing behavior in a veterinarian and it really upsets me.  I'm so sorry you are going through this.  This type of situation should never be experienced by any pet owner.
The stitches need to stay in place for at least 10 days for the skin to mend. Katie definitely needs more stitches to heal.
Please give Katie tons of kisses for me and let me know how she does!
