Chihuahua Teeth

Question
I have seven small dogs. Two Yorkies and five Chihuahuas. My smallest Chi, Angel is one year and seven months old. She weighs one pound and ten ounces. She is healthy and active. And very sweet. She does have an overbite. Her baby teeth didn't fall out and she developed a great deal of plaque. My vet removed twelve teeth, leaving her with about fourteen. He said that she did not develop the enamil needed. Have you encountered this. I have heard that Chihuahuas can have a problem due to the fact that the smaller they are the less room they have in their little mouths. I would appreciate any feedback you can give on this subject. Thank you, Vicky Kraus

Answer
Hello.

Small breed dogs have a lot of problems with their teeth.  The enamel may have not developed due to medication she received as a puppy or if she was ill.

The best thing is to brush their teeth daily to keep plaque from building up on their teeth and provide them with dry food and A LOT of things to chew on....greenies, rawhides, dentabones, gumabones, etc.
