yellow female lab

Question
We have a female lab we rescued who is about 3-4 yrs old.She is our 5th lab, may have other mix in her, just darker yellow. Her underbelly is pretty white. She ends up stained where she urinates. Another female we had, had it too, but I could usually gently wash her and it wasn't so bad. Bear's is very stubborn, making her skin dark, and now she has a whole patch on her leg. At first I thought last night she had flea dirt, so I bathed her, no fleas...she is treated for them and heartworm monthly. Some stuff came off, but it's almost like a dirt you can't scrub off.  When I asked our vet about our other girl, she said it could be a little bacterial problem, but we never got it gone or cured. I've had male yellows, just had one put down after 13 years and he had a little yellowing of the fur, but never anything my females have got.  Think after this I'll go back to males.  Any ideas of a skin problem? She has been on top Eukanuba food the whole year we've had her. She was a rescue. Thanks

Answer
Your vet would have to look much closer at the skin to see if the hair is stained, there is a bacterial infection, or if there are blocked hair follicles causing a thing like ablackhead.  Labs are prone to allergies, low thyroid hormones, and yeast infections, all of which can cause darkening of the skin.  If it is true urine staining of the hairs, then sometimes there is an anatomical problem not allowing her urine to escape properly when she urinates.
