Broken tail

Question
My dog, Pancho, has what originally I thought was a hot spot on his tail.  When it didn't respond to treatment, I took him back to the vet and he said the tail is broken and recommended removing the tail.
Can you tell me what is involved?  And how long recovery is?

Thank you

Answer
Removing the tail is not an involved process...it is done on puppies at birth for many breeds.  Basically a heavy sedative would be given or general anesthesia, then a tourniquet applied to the tail, a bone scissors would be used to cut the tail and the the skin is sutured closed over top of it.  Recovery is generally pretty quick and he should be to normal in a few days.
